Former mayor Ralph Brown went missing from Cornelius, Oregon, on May 16, suffering from dementia, and has not had his memory or heart medication since he left his home.

Ralph suffers from dementia and has not had his memory or heart medication since he left his home.

Over 4 months have passed now since 76-year-old Ralph Brown went missing!

His daughter, Laurie Saunders, said during a news conference that she spoke with her father the night he went missing shortly after 9pm and that he wasn’t sure exactly where he was.

He told her he was “literally in the bushes,” and that he might be near a golf course, but couldn’t give her more specific details. He also asked if people were out looking for him.

She told him to wait for a call from his son, who was going to go out and find him, but Brown didn’t answer the phone after that. And nobody has been able to find him, even though hundreds of people out there helping with the search.

This series documents Adventures With Purpose's multi-day search for Ralph.

Brown is 76 years old, about 5-foot-10, with white hair and blue eyes. He's also missing the tip of his index finger.

His car is a dark blue, 2014 Nissan Sentra with Oregon plates.

Anyone who sees him or his car is asked to call the Washington County Sheriff’s Office at 503-629-0111

There have been a few sightings reported, but none were substantiated, said Daryle Brown, Ralph Brown’s son.

Daryle said his parents were in their home on May 16 when Brown stood up and said he was going to his “other house.”

Ralph has early-onset Alzheimer’s symptoms, which leads to confusion. He no longer has a driver’s license and has not driven a car in more than a year, Daryle said.

He drove away from the home in the 600 block of South 12th Avenue in Cornelius, Oregon.

There have been no location pings on his phone after 10:25pm that evening, and no communication from Brown in the time since he’s been missing.

There have also been no charges to his credit card.

More than 200 volunteers are still helping in the search, including former students, friends, and even strangers.

Do we feel this is a true crime with foul play or simply a missing persons cold case accident? In our opinion, there are no signs of foul play we are aware of.

Hug the ones you love for you never know when it might be the last time you see them.

We are humbled by the opportunity all of you have given us to help in the search for answers as to what happened to Ralph.

The AWP Movement would not be possible without your support, helping us travel the US offering our services for FREE to families searching for their lost loved ones… Thank you!

These are a couple things I have been thinking about, 1st maybe he was going home, back to his childhood home because with dementia (I have worked with many dementia patients as a nursing assistant) they tend to go back to their childhood when they are talking. Always yelling out looking for their mom. I work midnights so I just let them know that their mom went home to get some sleep. The 2nd thing popped into my head this afternoon. When I had Allstate car insurance and downloaded their app onto my phone so I can get a discount it tracked the roads you took, your speed, etc. Did your dad have something like that on his phone where maybe the car insurance company could track the actual roads he took? If he did, and you haven’t checked with them, maybe they have records on where the car stopped last.

Thank you again, AWP for searching and keep Ralph’s name out there. PLUS you rule out so much area. That’s all we can do in cases where someone goes missing in a car— is rule out any possible places that could hide a car. Much love.

I don’t know for sure as I didn’t see his picture till two days later but I tend to have a good memory for faces… I might have seen him the day he went missing. For all I know it could of been someone who looked like him but it felt wrong not to say anything… It was at the McDonalds on Murray and Cornell, sometime between 9 and Midnight…I am only saying this as it might be another place to look. I pray that he is found.

    1. AUTUMNVIBES says:
      October 8, 2021 at 3:19 pm

@Kristine Teall true but he was clearly driving like he was lost, if you look at the map of the route he took on the Facebook page you can tell how all over the place his driving was, usually if a person stops for food or petrol then they wouldn’t continue to drive the same route for 4 hours going in circles. So I doubt he actually had enough sense in him to stop for food or petrol etc. Especially the way that the cell phone pings suddenly stopped altogether otherwise they would be able to release cctv footage of him being at xyz building. It is more likely IMO that he didn’t stop until he ran out of petrol or his phone ran out of battery. A guy that is lost wouldn’t just waltz up to order a maccy d’s

    2. Kristine Teall says:
      October 8, 2021 at 3:43 pm

@AUTUMNVIBES you’d be surprised what people with dementia will do. My mom would say things like she had a plane to catch back to Montana, and we hadn’t lived there in 30 years. She remembered my brother, but not me. It’s so unpredictable. Maybe he met a friend at McDonald’s for coffee everyday, he may have stopped there thinking they’d be there. I feel so bad for the family, and I hope someone reports a sighting that at least points them in the right direction
It’s got to be hell for them.

    3. Michelle Hoffman says:

      October 15, 2021 at 4:16 pm

@AUTUMNVIBES My dad had dementia and you would be amazed at the things he used to do. He took off on foot one day I was out back hanging clothes at the time. He couldnt have been gone more than 15 mins. Me and some neighbors searched and searched and eventually called 911. At times he could remember everything other times he couldnt remember 5 mins ago but would remember 40 yrs ago. I live in Calif, Him and my mom used to live in W VA. he used to work in a coal mine back there. we didnt find him for about 29 hrs, and when we did he had walked 13 miles down a water canal that ran by the end of my street, some kids heard him hollaring and went and got their dad. He after he was checked out at hospital and released he told me/and police that he thought he was in W VA and was late for work which he used to walk to so he took off down the canal. He (13 miles later) saw a round opening in the side of the canal bank and thought it was the mine, and crawled in, realized it wasnt but he was stuck. At that point his memory returned to normal he said. Luckily other than being a bit dehydrated, hungry, tired, dirty and embarrassed he was ok. I hardly ever took my eyes off him except for bathroom runs after that lol…

    5. Laurie Saunders says:
      October 20, 2021 at 11:58 am

@Kristine Teall Dad always thought he had to get to a meeting. Dad is a planner and logistics guy. Making sure details were organized and boxes were checked.

Like I said before Jared doesn’t or hasn’t given up on any search he does. I know he’d love to solve all of them but there’s so many cases that only a small talented team can do with what they have to work with.

    1. Garbox80 says:
      October 7, 2021 at 4:01 pm

@Swirvin’ Birds I think the original message was that they don’t *forget* any of those. Not actively searching doesn’t mean that they have quir for good if new leads would come.

    2. randomuser135 says:
      October 7, 2021 at 4:03 pm

@Swirvin’ Birds but there often aren’t many leads they can go on, if he wasn’t in the area they were searching they can’t continue searching for the same case, also it can give other search teams chances to offer their help too. It doesn’t have to be AWP that solves them

    3. randomuser135 says:
      October 7, 2021 at 4:04 pm

@Garbox80 at least they have better leads on Ralph’s case because of the cell phone pings but they could do with a lot more help, I think they want to solve it but it doesn’t have to be them that finds every case or solves every case, they could get help from other search teams in the area too

    4. Maddie Adams says:
      October 7, 2021 at 6:48 pm

@Swirvin’ Birds note I believe he said when threats or law enforcement get involved or ask to stop he will pull back.

    5. David Clemens says:
      October 7, 2021 at 6:54 pm

@Swirvin’ Birds also to be fair you don’t know if he’s working with other search teams that are still going to continue searching.

Very true. My mother had cancer and towards the end as the end grew closer she went back to her childhood. She no longer knew who i was and even asked why i kept calling her mommy. She said she didnt know who i am but knew she loved me. Lol she was hallucinating and reverted back to a childhood home. Her brother n law figured that one out for me when things wasnt making since to me. Then it all made since. I knew she was acting more like a kid at times but wasnt putting together why she saw some of what she saw. Ive paid more attention since then and most cancer patients seem to do that at the end . Yes i know its not just cancer patients that do this. Its sad for them all cancer or not. I just hope he is found so this family can have thier closure in knowing what happened and where.

Did he have specific hobbies that are second nature to him. That phone call is probably what caused him to go somewhere. What was the conversation about?

    5. Laurie Saunders says:
      October 20, 2021 at 10:15 am

@Sarah Beth’s Stitching He asked if we were looking for him. He said he was in the bushes, literally in the bushes. I asked if he was near ‘the’ golf course. He said I think so. I told him to stay with the car and to answer the next person to call would be Daryle, my brother. (Context: I was calling from WV. My brother lives 10 min from my parents.) He didn’t pick up thr phone after that.

AWP has been nothing but amazing to our family. They are knowledgeable about what they do, but they never pushed passed our comfort level. Jared and team are great at explaining (repeatedly) the facts and dispelling misinformation. My Dad would have been the first to jump at the chance to be interviewed. I am so proud of Megan. Something you may want to consider, as I am taking this from my many years in being with different search and recovery teams. Many national ground search and rescue teams use the book “”Lost Person Behavior”” as a sort of Bible where they begin their searches from. It too states that most persons with dementia, are found within miles of their residence. In watching this episode, something that comes to my mind, is that if he does have dementia he may have regressed to a middle age self or possibly younger. With that said, the point I would like to get across is he may have traveled towards an old house that he used to live in or an old friend that he used to visit often or someplace he went often as a younger self. With your team, you may want to look at any bodies of water that are near those routes of travel, and clear those as well. His past information should be able to get from the family or possibly his physician if he had one.. I wish you and the team best of luck in bringing this gentleman home. As always, if you are near the middle of Michigan, my home and any of my equipment (boat, dive gear, sonar etc) is always open to you all.

    1. Rosanne Massman says:
      October 17, 2021 at 12:50 am

Agreed… If he said that he was going to his “other home”, it is most likely somewhere that he lived previously.

I was about to type the same, I’ve worked in dementia support for over 20yrs and alot of the time past memories are clearer to even a trigger can make the memories believe that his parents are still alive and this can happen even in the early stages of dementia… I truly hope you find him
