Garfield Heights John Doe remains unidentified 35 years after children discovered his remains in Ohio — but a mysterious note found inside his shoe could hold an important clue.
On September 11, 1991, children playing behind homes on East 81st Street in Garfield Heights, Ohio, discovered the skeletal remains of a young Black man believed to have been approximately 18–21 years old. Investigators could not determine his identity.
Among his belongings was an extraordinary clue: a handwritten message found inside one of his shoes containing the names “Cynthia” and “Boo Boo.” Authorities have never publicly connected those names to his identity.
Decades later, the investigation has taken a major turn. In 2026, authorities reclassified his death as a homicide after reviewing the circumstances of the case. Investigators also located additional DNA evidence that is being pursued for investigative genetic genealogy, potentially offering another path toward discovering his identity.
In this episode of The Hidden Truth, we examine the Garfield Heights John Doe mystery, the note hidden in his shoe, the evidence left behind, the homicide ruling and the modern DNA effort that could finally help investigators answer a question that has remained unresolved for 35 years:
Who was he?
And if investigators can finally restore his name, could that open new avenues in the search for whoever was responsible for his death?
