Nine days later, the Alachua County
Sheriff’s Department closed her case.
Three pages of investigation notes.
Zero forensic follow-up. One cause of
death: accidental drowning.
There was one problem.
Camille Washington could not swim.
Her mother Delores knew it. Her
coworkers knew it. Her best friend of
twelve years knew it.
The detective never asked.
What followed was not a cold case.
It was a closed case — closed too fast,
too quietly, and too conveniently for
a twenty-six year old Black nurse
whose shoes were found neatly placed
beside her car, whose purse was locked
in her trunk, and whose phone was never
sent to forensics.
For fourteen years, Delores Washington
did what the department refused to do.
She investigated her own daughter’s
death.
Four formal complaints. Nineteen months
on a waiting list. A private
investigator hired with funeral money.
Seven witnesses the police never
contacted. A partial plate number
sitting in a neighbor’s personal
journal — because she had been waiting
for someone official to call.
Nobody ever did.
This is Camille’s story.
