न्यूयॉर्क टाइम्स की रिपोर्ट ने इस गैरहाजिरी की असली वजह बताई। IRGC के दो सदस्यों और जनाज़े की तैयारी से जुड़े एक व्यक्ति ने बताया कि मोजतबा खुद 9 जुलाई को मशहद में होने वाले दफन में शामिल होना चाहते थे, लेकिन ईरान के सुरक्षा अधिकारियों ने उन्हें रोक दिया। वजह एक ही थी — इज़राइल उन्हें मार सकता है।
और यह कोई छोटी चिंता नहीं है।

Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s new Supreme Leader. Ali Khamenei’s son. The man whose name still governs Iran—could not attend his own father’s funeral. A New York Times report revealed the real reason for this absence. Two IRGC members and a person involved in the funeral preparations said that Mojtaba himself wanted to attend the burial in Mashhad on July 9th, but Iranian security officials prevented him. The reason was one: Israel might kill him. And this is no small concern.
