The Poor Daughters-in-Law’s Cool Kitchen Beneath the Waterfall
**Narration**
It was the peak of summer. The blazing sun poured down like fire from the sky, and every gust of wind felt as hot as boiling water. In a small village, the scorching heat always hit the poorest families the hardest.
Let’s visit Bhima’s humble home. The tin roof had become so hot that it felt like a burning iron pan. Inside, the house resembled a furnace. Children cried because of painful heat rashes, while the elderly lay exhausted on old cots. In the smoky kitchen stood three daughters-in-law, drenched in sweat and struggling to prepare food.
Rambha Devi sat nearby, fanning herself rapidly while coughing from the unbearable heat. Bhima lay weakly beside her.
—
### **Rambha Devi (angrily)**
“Hey, you three queens! It’s already afternoon, and this house still has no peace. My throat is completely dry with thirst, yet all of you are sitting inside doing nothing!”
—
### **Rajni (wiping sweat from her forehead)**
“Mother, we’re not sitting idle. Go ahead and check the clay pot yourself. There isn’t a single drop of water left. Food can’t be cooked without water, no matter how long we sit in front of the stove.”
—
### **Manjari (frustrated)**
“The children have been crying since morning. Their backs are covered with painful heat rashes. This house feels like an oven. How can anyone survive here? And now we’ve completely run out of water.”
—
### **Bindiya (pushing an empty broken pot aside)**
“Honestly, it feels impossible to breathe in this house. Rakesh, Sandesh, and Vishesh have been working in the fields since morning. God knows how they’re surviving under this terrible sun.”
—
### **Bhima (weakly coughing)**
“My daughters… don’t argue. The weather itself is cruel. But please… somehow find some water. I feel like my life is slipping away.”
—
### **Rambha Devi (mocking them)**
“I’ll lose my life because of you lazy girls! Your father-in-law is suffering, and all you care about are your heat rashes. Go and bring water from anywhere. Otherwise, there won’t be any cooking tonight!”
—
### **Narration**
How could anyone cook when every single drop of water had become more precious than gold?
Meanwhile, the government’s only water tanker arrived at the village square. Within minutes, hundreds of poor villagers rushed toward it carrying buckets, pots, and containers. Shouting, pushing, and fighting broke out under the blazing sun.
Rajni, Manjari, and Bindiya also joined the crowd with their empty buckets.
The line was already packed. Sunita, Bimla, and Madhuri stood near the tanker, blocking everyone else.
—
### **Sunita (pushing Rajni)**
“Hey Rajni! Get back! We’ve been standing here since morning. Put your black bucket at the end of the line.”
—
### **Bindiya (angrily)**
“Why should we move back? Does your name belong on this water? Our elderly father-in-law is sick. Please let us fill just one bucket.”
—
### **Bimla (laughing sarcastically)**
“Oh really? If your father-in-law is sick, take him to a doctor. Are you planning to drink the entire tanker? Stay within your limits and stand at the back.”
—
### **Manjari (raising her voice)**
“Don’t lecture us about limits! Everyone here needs water. This government tanker comes only once a week, and even then you’re trying to bully everyone.”
—
### **Madhuri (rolling her eyes)**
“Are we bullying people? Or are you three sisters-in-law trying to rule the whole queue? Move away before you lose even the chance to get a single drop of water.”
—
### **Narration**
The pushing became worse.
Rajni’s bucket slipped from her hands, and half of the precious water she had managed to collect spilled onto the dry ground.
She watched helplessly as every drop disappeared into the dust.
—
### **Rajni (with tears in her eyes)**
“Oh God! Half of our water is gone! Now tell me… should we use what’s left for cooking or for drinking? Don’t any of you have a heart?”
—
**End of Part 1**
