The Answer to ‘Why Aren’t You Married?’ I Wish I Knew Sooner

Why I never married? At 64, people still ask — and I finally have an honest answer on being single.

I’ve spent most of my life single. And for a long time, I thought that meant something was missing in me because of my relationship status. That I’d missed my chance. That by being a single woman I’d somehow failed at the one thing I was told women are supposed to do — marry.

But here’s what I’ve learned after all these years of living alone, of building a life on my own terms at Black Bear Cottage: being single after 60 isn’t a void waiting to be filled. It’s a life. A full, meaningful, chosen one.

In this video, I answer the question I’ve been asked more than any other — “Why aren’t you married?” — and I share the honest truth I wish someone had told me years ago.
