This week is ADCC week, and Bernardo Faria sat down to answer a question he keeps coming back to. What made Marcelo Garcia one of the greatest of all time, in the gi and in no-gi? Marcelo was Bernardo’s biggest hero in jiu-jitsu long before they trained together, and this video is Bernardo’s own answer.
His main reason is simple. Almost every time Marcelo showed up at ADCC, he brought something new that nobody was ready for, and he hit it over and over against the best grapplers in the world. The way Bernardo remembers it, 2003 was the X-guard and the arm drags, 2005 the north-south choke, 2007 the high elbow guillotine, and 2009 the crucifix. Marcelo was usually one of the smallest guys in his division and in the open class, and he still went after the submission every time instead of playing for points.
Bernardo explains why that matters so much. Winning titles makes you a world champion. Winning while you show the whole sport a new move, and then watching that move become the thing everybody wants to learn, makes you a legend people will still talk about decades from now. He remembers when jiu-jitsu was learned from magazines, and after Marcelo hit the X-guard at ADCC, everyone was buying magazines to figure out what it was.
He also talks about training and teaching at Marcelo’s school in New York City and rolling with him almost every day in his prime. The best titles of Bernardo’s career came in those years, and he gives a big part of the credit to what he learned from Marcelo about technique and about the mindset he takes into competition.

Bernardo Faria is a 5x World Champion. Bernardo started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Juiz de Fora – MG, Brazil at the age of 14 in 2001. After receiving the Black Belt from his first instructor Ricardo Marques in 2008, He moved to Sao Paulo to join BJJ legend Fabio Gurgel and his Alliance team. After many years of training and winning many major titles, Bernardo moved to NYC in 2013 to train and teach at Marcelo Garcia Academy. In 2015 Bernardo achieved his dream of winning the IBJJF World Championship Open class title and his division, doing the double Gold and becoming the 1st in the IBJJF Ranking and also chosen as the best athlete of 2015.
Bernardo Faria has now taken on the mission to share some of the lessons, techniques, experiences and more that he has learned along in his 16 years and counting as a BJJ student, teacher and world class competitor.
