BLACK MISSING, OVERLOOKED AND LEFT BEHIND: WHY THE SYSTEM IS FAILING AND WHY CHANGE CAN NO LONGER WAIT
While Black people make up around four percent of the UK population, they account for an estimated fourteen percent of all missing person incidents. That single statistic exposes a deeply troubling imbalance, but the reality behind it is even more stark. When Black children and adults go missing, they are more likely to stay missing for longer, less likely to be identified as vulnerable, less likely to be flagged as at risk of sexual or criminal exploitation, and less likely to be found by police. Their cases also receive significantly less media attention than those involving White missing people, compounding the sense that some lives are treated as less urgent or less worthy of concern.
Research and lived experience show that these disparities are not isolated or accidental. Families of Black missing people consistently report being dismissed, not listened to, or made to feel as though they are exaggerating concerns. Risk is underestimated. Mental health vulnerabilities are overlooked.
