THE HISTORY BEHIND THIS VIDEO
– 20 December 1943: 2nd Lt. Charlie Brown (21), on his first combat mission, flew the B-17F “Ye Olde Pub” of the 379th Bomb Group against Bremen. Flak and fighters left the bomber crippled — nose blown open, tail shot away, an engine dead, the tail gunner Hugh Eckenrode killed, most of the crew wounded.
– Luftwaffe pilot Franz Stigler (28), a decorated veteran of the North African and home-defence air war, took off after the straggler — then flew close enough to see the dying crew, and refused to fire.
– Stigler escorted the bomber past German coastal flak with his own aircraft and saluted Brown before peeling away. Sparing an enemy could have meant a firing squad; he told no one, and assumed for decades the bomber went down anyway.
– “Ye Olde Pub” made it back to England. Brown was ordered to keep the encounter quiet.
– In 1990, after years of searching and a notice in a fighter-pilots’ newsletter, Brown found Stigler — who had emigrated to Canada. They met, became like brothers, and both died in 2008, months apart.
