On the night of May 13th, 2008, 19-year-old Brandon Swanson left an end-of-semester party in Canby, Minnesota and headed home along a dark rural road. Somewhere along the way, he drove his car into a ditch. He called his parents. They picked up.
For forty-seven minutes, Brian and Annette Swanson drove through the pitch-black Minnesota countryside trying to find their son, while Brandon walked through dark fields trying to guide them toward him. At one point they could see each other’s headlights blinking in the distance — but the rural roads wouldn’t connect.
Then, at 2:37am, mid-sentence, Brandon said two words.
“Oh, s***.”
And the line went dead.
His parents called back. The phone rang and rang. No answer. They drove to where they thought he was. They found nothing. When police were called, officers initially told them it wasn’t unusual for a young man his age to stay out all night.
When investigators finally pulled Brandon’s cell phone records, they discovered he had been twenty-five miles from where he thought he was. His car was eventually found off Highway 68 — no keys, no belongings, no Brandon. Cadaver dogs followed his scent three miles across dark fields to the banks of the Yellow Medicine River. Then the scent stopped.
Over 122 square miles of terrain have been searched. The river has been excavated. No body, no clothing, no phone has ever been recovered.
Brandon Swanson has been missing for seventeen years. His disappearance prompted the passing of Brandon’s Law in Minnesota — requiring police to immediately investigate missing adults. His family kept their porch light on every night for years.
Nobody has ever explained what he saw in those final two seconds before the line went dead.
