14 Ways to Remind Yourself (And Your Kid) That AI is a Machine, Not Your Friend

AI literacy for kids starts with one unusual sentence: everyone poops except Claude.

AI does not poop. It does not sleep. It does not get tired, it does not have a bad day, and it does not miss you when you close the screen. That sounds obvious, and most of us are forgetting it anyway.

38% of kids aged 12 to 17 have already used AI, roughly three times the rate of their parents at 12%. More than 1 in 10 of those kids say they turn to AI for advice about things that worry them. Which means kids are building their entire mental model of what AI is, mostly on their own.

I’m Dr. Carla Engelbrecht. I’ve spent 25 years making education and entertainment media for kids at Sesame Street, Netflix, PBS Kids and more, studying how children build a picture of the world through media. This video is 14 small, concrete things you can do to keep an accurate mental model of AI, for you and for your kids.

Not fear. Not blind trust. Just an honest answer to what kind of thing you are actually talking to.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
– Why anthropomorphizing AI is a design choice, not an accident
– What AI is actually doing when it “thinks” (it’s a prediction machine)
– The pronouns, product names, and verbs that quietly imply a mind
– How to spot AI sycophancy, the flattery that avoids friction instead of telling you the truth
– How to test the boundaries so kids can see the gears
– How to define a real friend before AI is ever in the room

You will slip. You’ll thank Alexa tomorrow. That’s fine. Catching yourself out loud is the whole practice, and it’s how kids learn what real connection looks like and why it’s worth more than a perfectly generated response.

Everyone poops except Claude.
