The cover-up, and the album’s flat-line. After the cellar, “What the Forest Kept” does not get loud — it goes cold. The bodies stripped of their gold, doused in acid, pit-buried in the Koptyaki forest; two of the children burned and scattered apart so no one counting could be sure. A bone-flute and bowed-lyre carry a grief that never resolves. No grave, no stone, no name above the ground — just trees that kept it still.
This is the mechanism that explains the rest of the album. Because the count never closed, rumours of an escaped daughter could grow; every impostor and every film grew in the gap where the girls were thrown. The chorus walks the consequence forward — a pit, an absence, and a lie that needed us to disappear, so the fairy tale could rise. The cold “rise” here is the album’s resurrection spine inverted: what rose was the lie, out of an unmarked grave.

The disposal is documented. After the killing the bodies were stripped of the hidden jewels, doused in sulphuric acid, and buried in a pit in the Koptyaki forest; two of the children — the Tsarevich Alexei and one of his sisters — were burned and buried separately a short distance away, leaving two bodies missing from the main grave. That missing pair is the engine of the whole survival legend: because the count never closed, the wrong ground was searched for decades. The main grave was located in 1979 and officially exhumed in 1991; the second grave was found in 2007 and DNA-confirmed in 2008, proving that none of the four daughters survived.
