Papa brings home a bonus envelope and announces something the children have waited years for — a real family trip to the hills. Mummy worries about the money, and it is Dadi who quietly presses her own savings into her hands. A road map is spread on the floor, two dates are circled on the calendar, and nobody pays much attention to the weather warning on the evening news.
They set off at four in the morning in an old second-hand car with luggage tied under a blue plastic sheet. For a few golden hours it is perfect — puris and pickle passed around, hands out of the window, songs on the road. Then the sky turns black. A landslide blocks the highway, a shortcut turns into a mud track, and their car sinks into the wet earth with no house or person in sight.
Help arrives from where they least expect it — a village boy running through the rain with a banana leaf over his head, and an old woman who refuses to let them go any further that night. What follows is a leaking roof, a forgotten car boot, paper boats racing down a drain at midnight, and a hidden waterfall that no tourist has ever seen.
And then, on the way back through the forest, Mummy turns around and realises one small yellow frock is missing from the group.
