We Can’t Find 85% of the Matter in the Universe

Dark matter and the missing mass it leaves behind are the central puzzle in cosmology, because they seem to hold galaxies together and set the universe’s overall recipe even though nobody has ever detected them directly. This episode follows the evidence ladder from Vera Rubin and Kent Ford’s flat galaxy rotation curves to Zwicky’s Coma Cluster, gravitational lensing maps, and the Planck cosmic microwave background peaks that pin the cosmos at roughly 4.9% ordinary matter, 26.8% dark matter, and 68.3% dark energy.

It then turns to the search itself: LZ’s ten-tonne liquid xenon detector underground at Sanford, its world-leading null limits, and the moment the most sensitive dark matter traps began hitting the neutrino fog by detecting boron-8 solar neutrinos instead. The ending is an honest scorecard, from the June 2026 Bullet Cluster reanalysis and the debate over MOND to the subsolar-mass gravitational-wave candidate S251112cm and Euclid’s upcoming 3D map of where the invisible mass actually is.
