On May 27th, 1997, a tornado formed near Jarrell, Texas and did everything a tornado is not supposed to do. It moved southwest instead of northeast. It crawled forward at barely 15 miles per hour. And as it bore down on the Double Creek Estates subdivision, a resident’s photograph captured two funnels twisting into the shape of a walking figure — an image now known as “Dead Man Walking.”
What it did to Double Creek remains the most extreme tornado damage ever surveyed. Homes weren’t destroyed — they were removed. Pavement peeled from roads, grass stripped from the earth, and 27 people were gone. This is the story of the F5 that broke every rule, and the neighborhood that never stood a chance.
