Between April 1971 and September 1972, six young Black girls and young women disappeared during ordinary journeys through Washington, D.C.
Their names were Carol Denise Spinks, Darlenia Denise Johnson, Brenda Faye Crockett, Nenomoshia Yates, Brenda Denise Woodard and Diane Williams.
Their bodies were later recovered near major roads in Washington, D.C., and Prince George’s County, Maryland. One victim managed to telephone her family after she had been taken. Another was found with a handwritten message challenging investigators to catch the person responsible.
The unidentified offender became known as the Freeway Phantom.
More than five decades later, no one has been convicted.
