Spain and Morocco are locked in a border standoff over Ceuta and Melilla, and the 2026 Ceuta migrant crisis exposed how much leverage Morocco really holds over Europe’s southern border and the Western Sahara dispute.
Around 49,000 people crossed from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in roughly 24 hours in late July 2026. Spain deployed police, then soldiers, then installed a floating barrier at sea. People died. Two days later, almost all of those who crossed had walked back into Morocco.
That same week, irregular crossings into the European Union as a whole were running at a six-year low.
This investigation looks at why one small city on the African coast took in more people in a day than the rest of Europe’s frontier saw in months. It traces the May 2021 precedent, the diplomatic timeline in the ten days before the crossings, the December 2020 decision that reshaped Morocco’s position on Western Sahara, and the American congressional language that described two Spanish cities as sitting on Moroccan territory.
Nothing in this video claims that anyone ordered the crossings. That has not been established, and Spain’s National Court has opened preliminary proceedings to examine whether the entry was a concerted action. What the video presents is a documented timeline.
A NOTE ON THE NUMBERS
Reported crossing figures range from roughly 40,000 to 60,000 depending on the outlet. We use the Spanish government estimate of about 49,000 and say so on screen. Death tolls have been revised upward as reporting developed, and every figure shown carries its source.
