On the morning of January 15, 1947, a mother walking with her child through a vacant lot in Leimert Park, Los Angeles, made a harrowing discovery. What she initially mistook for a discarded tailor’s mannequin was 22-year-old aspiring actress Elizabeth Short—brutally bisected, completely drained of blood, and carved with a horrific 3-inch smile.
The grotesque murder of “The Black Dahlia” triggered one of the largest and most chaotic homicide investigations in LAPD and FBI history. The killer taunted investigators by mailing personal items—wiped clean with gasoline—directly to local newspapers alongside cryptic cut-out letter notes signed “The Black Dahlia Avenger.”
What really happened during the missing six days between her last sighting at the Biltmore Hotel on January 9 and her discovery on January 15? Was her killer a wealthy physician like Dr. George Hodel, a prominent nightclub owner, or a shadowy figure hiding within Hollywood’s golden era?
In this true crime documentary deep dive, we explore the crime scene forensics, the media circus, the police corruption, and the primary suspect theories surrounding history’s most notorious cold case.
