How Nikola Tesla Almost Built a Death Ray That Would Have Ended All War

In 1934, a seventy-eight-year-old Nikola Tesla was living in a hotel
room he could no longer afford, feeding pigeons on the windowsill, and
offering the most valuable weapon idea in history to any government
willing to fund him.

Five governments received the same letter that summer. The White House.
The British Foreign Office. King Alexander of Yugoslavia. The government
of France. Joseph Stalin.

All five refused.

Tesla called it Teleforce. The newspapers called it the death ray. Both
were correct.

The weapon was a particle beam capable of destroying ten thousand
incoming aircraft at four hundred kilometers range. It would make war
impossible. Aircraft would fall from the sky. Battleships would sink
at anchor. Every nation would have absolute defensive capability.

Tesla claimed the first working installation could be built in three
months for two million dollars.

The Soviet Union paid twenty-five thousand dollars for a preliminary
evaluation in 1935. The evaluation report has never been declassified
by any Russian government since.

The other four governments never replied at all.

Tesla died alone in Room 3327 of the Hotel New Yorker on January 7,
1943. Within four hours of his death, two FBI agents arrived at the
hotel. They removed every notebook, every diagram, every letter in
his suite. The material filled seventeen sealed metal trunks. It was
shipped to Washington that same evening.

A young MIT physicist named John Trump evaluated the material and
concluded the Teleforce documents contained no practical weapon
design of military value.

That report has never been fully declassified.

Approximately three hundred technical documents from Tesla’s archive
remain classified in Washington today, seventy-three years later.
The Belgrade Tesla Museum received the released bulk in 1952.
Multiple diagrams referenced in Tesla’s own correspondence were
missing from what Belgrade received.

Nobody has publicly built a working Teleforce.

But the Reagan Strategic Defense Initiative funded classified
particle beam research at Los Alamos and Livermore in the 1980s.
Modern DARPA directed energy programs remain classified. Some
insiders have suggested Tesla’s seized documents contributed to
the theoretical basis.

The Hotel New Yorker still stands. Room 3327 is a regular guest
room today. The pigeons still gather on the windowsills.

Almost nobody knows why.
