John Danaher answers that on the mat at BJJ Fanatics, with Bernardo Faria, Placido Santos and
Reese LaFever. His position: the omoplata is the submission that is easiest to enter and hardest
to finish, and the blame sits with the way it has been taught. He asks here the same question he
asked about heel hooks twenty years ago, when everybody told him they were structurally weak. Is
the move broken, or are we the ones using it wrong?
The correction he shows on Reese LaFever is mechanical. Most people fight for head height, trying
to get their head above their opponent’s head. Danaher shows that this means almost nothing while
you sit on your buttocks with your feet in front of you, because your hips are still under his
shoulders. The real battle is hips over shoulders. He walks through the inside foot movement that
takes your feet from in front of you to behind you, the hurdler’s stretch that puts base under
you, and the elbow control that kills the posture-up before it starts.
From there the omoplata becomes a riding position. You start controlling one side of the body and
you drive to control both, following his defensive turns until you reach one of five finishing
positions where his movement shuts down. Bernardo boils it down to three rules: control both sides
of the body, keep the foot behind you, keep the hips above the shoulders.
Danaher also makes the case for putting time into the move. It uses your legs against your
opponent’s arms, the reps are cheap because you land in it every open mat, and it pays as a sweep
and as a submission at the same time.
