Bernardo Faria shows the armbar escape he has used his entire career, and the part that makes it different is where it takes you. Most escapes get you back to a neutral spot. This one drops you straight into the deep half guard, which is his favorite place to be off his back.
The idea behind it is bigger than one technique. In jiu jitsu you usually escape a bad position, land in a neutral position, and only then work toward your own game. Bernardo cuts the middle step out. You go from the worst spot on the mat to your best position in one move, so a match you were losing becomes a match you are winning a few seconds later.
He breaks the escape down piece by piece with Ricardo holding the armbar. Grab your own lapel for insurance, get your elbow under his heel, take a light grip on the pants, bridge and push the leg across, then turn sideways and pull the elbow free. From there you land in deep half guard, single leg half guard, or you come up and go straight to the over under pass.
This technique comes from the new series he filmed for the Fast Track BJJ line, Jiu-Jitsu For Old Guys: Submission Escapes. The whole system runs under an hour, every clip is one to two minutes, and it is built for people who want a full escape game without having to sit through a long instructional.
