A folk storytelling tale, sequel story to “The Fireman and the Viking Rose”. A tale of family and love.
When Winter Learned to Bloom
Verse 1
He was a fireman, strong and true,
With two small girls of golden hair.
And though his wife was often gone,
Her love was always waiting there.
They had their quarrels, as lovers do,
Then make their peace when night was through—
But one cold night, with words unsaid,
The winter came before they knew.
Verse 2
She left beneath a falling snow,
For one more journey far away.
He watched her go, still proud and hurt,
With things he never thought to say.
The mountain winds were fierce that night,
The clouds were black, the world was white.
And somewhere in those frozen hills,
A plane disappeared from sight.
Chorus
Oh, winter rose, and winter fell,
And took a love he knew so well.
He’d held his anger far too long,
And now the words of love were gone.
But hearts may break and seasons change,
And lost things sometimes rearrange.
For even when the cold winds blow,
A rose may find a way to grow.
Verse 3
Five years before, across the sea,
A soldier vanished from the fight.
His young wife waited through the years,
By day she hoped, by night she cried.
A little boy had grown beside her,
Six years old and asking why
The father he’d never known
Was only a picture by his side.
Verse 4
At last she laid her waiting down,
And took her sorrow by the hand.
“No more,” she said, “I’ll live for him.
I’ll raise my son the best I can.”
She found her work among the lost,
And helped the broken start again.
Then fate brought five sad hearts together
In a room where strangers met.
Chorus
Oh, winter rose, and winter fell,
And time had stories yet to tell.
Two little girls with hearts of gold,
A lonely boy both brave and bold.
Three children saw what grown-ups missed—
A lonely hand, a lonely kiss.
And while their parents grieved the past,
The little ones were planning fast.
Verse 5
“She needs a family,” whispered one.
“He needs somebody too.”
The little boy just smiled and said,
“I think I know what we should do.”
A picnic here, a game there,
A birthday cake, a borrowed chair.
They somehow always found a way
To leave their lonely parents there.
Bridge
She knew his sorrow; he knew hers.
Neither asked the other to forget.
They simply sat beside the pain
And learned that healing wasn’t yet.
Then one spring morning, something changed—
A laugh beneath the apple tree.
He looked at her, she looked at him,
And winter lost its memory.
Final Chorus
Oh, winter rose, and winter passed,
And spring came softly home at last.
The fireman found a second flame,
And whispered love without the shame
Of thinking he was betraying one
Whose life had ended far too soon.
For love does not replace the past—
It carries it into the bloom.
Verse 6
Two golden girls found one more home,
A little boy found sisters two—
And the woman who had waited years
Found love where none was meant to bloom.
She never took another’s place,
Nor asked him to erase her name.
She simply warmed his winter heart
And taught it how to love again.
Outro
So if you hear the winter wind
Come crying through the trees,
Remember hearts can bloom again
After the hardest freeze.
And somewhere underneath the snow,
Where broken roses lie,
A seed of love may still remain—
Just waiting for the spring to rise.
Final line, softly:
For even winter learns to bloom…
when love refuses to die.
