You already know the name. You have probably heard that they own the banks, start the wars, keep the gold. That version is two hundred years old, and it is wrong in a way that should come as a relief: there is nothing hidden in the real one at all.
This is the whole story in one sitting — from a street four metres wide in Frankfurt to five brothers in five capitals. The famous Waterloo scene, the one every retelling uses, was invented for a thirty-six page French pamphlet published in 1846, thirty-one years after the battle, under the pen name Satan. We name the source and show what actually happened instead.
What the fortune really came from is duller and far more useful: in 1810 the slowest and most expensive step in moving money was PROOF. A house in London had to check whether a house in Frankfurt was good for the sum — letters, references, four weeks, sometimes six, a cut taken at every stop. Five brothers in five cities did not have to check each other. Meyer Amschel was competing on how long it took, and nobody else was even watching that number.
And then the same rule that built it killed it: the will bound the business to male heirs only. It held for three generations. Naples closed in 1863, Frankfurt in 1901 — there were Rothschilds in London, Paris and Vienna, and not one of them wanted to move.
