On April 3, 2004, Alonzo Brooks, 23, went to a party at a rural house outside La Cygne, Kansas. He was one of only three Black men at a party of over a hundred people. A mix-up over a ride home left him stranded there. He never came home.
For weeks there was no substantial official search. His family organized their own, around fifty volunteers, and on May 1, 2004 they found his body in a creek near the house. The original autopsy could not determine a cause of death, and the case went cold.
In 2019 the FBI reopened the investigation and exhumed his body for a second examination. In 2021 that report concluded the death was a homicide. Investigators are now examining whether he was targeted because of his race, treating it as a possible hate crime.
The FBI is offering a $100,000 reward. There have been no arrests.
