Episode Title: MS-00386 – Secrets at D.C. General Shelter
Case Overview
Relisha Tenau Rudd was an eight-year-old student at Payne Elementary School who lived with her family at the D.C. General Shelter in Washington, D.C., facing the immense struggles of poverty and homelessness while finding joy in simple pleasures like playing with a tablet and attending shows like Disney on Ice. In early 2014, she became targeted by 51-year-old shelter janitor Kahlil Malik Tatum, who capitalized on the family’s vulnerability by buying gifts and taking her on unauthorized outings before she abruptly stopped attending school in February 2014 under a fabricated excuse. After an alert school counselor triggered a missing-persons investigation in March 2014, surveillance footage captured Relisha with Tatum at local motels in her final confirmed sightings. The subsequent investigation revealed that Tatum murdered his wife before taking his own life in a park shed in March 2014. Though her body has never been found and her case remains one of the District’s longest unsolved mysteries, advocacy groups and the D.C. Metropolitan Police keep the actively open investigation alive with renewed public calls and rewards in hopes of bringing resolution to her family.
