Bernardo Faria recorded this the week of the World Masters in Las Vegas, but it is for anyone with a tournament coming up. Most of the people who train with him do jiu-jitsu as a hobby, with a job and a family waiting for them on Monday, and these are the three things he would tell any of them before they step on the mat.

The first one is about adrenaline. Instead of fighting the nerves and worrying that you feel them, accept them. Adrenaline was built to keep humans alive on a hunt, and a good level of it makes you fight harder.

The second one comes from his own career. He has worked with the same sports psychologist since he was a purple belt in 2006, and the biggest click was understanding that he wanted to be there rather than having to be there. He talks about looking across at opponents in finals who were desperate to win, while he only wanted to do his best, and what that did for his performance.

The third one is the one hobbyists forget. Win or lose, Monday is still Monday. The job is still there and the family is still there, and that is exactly why you can afford to go out and enjoy it. He also warns about the thing almost everybody does in the week of a tournament, which is hunting for one new move that will win the match. That move does not exist. It is all the moves you already trained.
