Three unrelated investigations show how very different pieces of police evidence led from an incident to an arrest or court outcome. The cases involve different forces, years, suspects and victims; no shared criminal connection is claimed.
On 29 June 2025, a National Police Air Service crew was helping Durham officers search for a missing person in Ferryhill when a green laser repeatedly struck the helicopter cockpit. Colin Quinn denied using it and invited officers to search his house. At Durham Crown Court on 19 August 2025, he was sentenced to four months in prison and ordered to pay £154 in court costs. Police said the laser also diverted resources from the missing-person search. The missing person and blurred home occupants are not identified.
The second case began when bank staff in Cirencester became concerned about a customer withdrawing thousands of pounds. Investigators traced a courier-fraud group impersonating police officers to a London flat. During the April 2021 operation, one person fled across rooftops before being arrested. The footage does not establish which convicted defendant is the runner. The completed six-person conspiracy was linked to more than 7,500 calls and losses of £430,452. Those completed-case figures come from the December 2023 outcome, not the earlier June 2022 report.
The final case began with reports of men trying to force garage doors in Birmingham. A black Peugeot with a distinctive space-saver rear wheel was later stopped at a McDonald’s drive-through. Phone evidence connected three men to more than 20 stolen cars worth about £500,000; police recovered 12 vehicles. At Birmingham Crown Court on 30 September 2022, the three received prison terms of eight years, six years and four months, and five years and six months.
