He was born missing fingers in an art built on grips. Then his student choked a Gracie.
This is the full story of jean jacques machado — the cousin who trained under Rickson Gracie, broke with the Gracie dynasty after the 1986 Copa Company final, rebuilt in Los Angeles with Chuck Norris, conquered ADCC in 1999, and created a pressure-and-position system that didn’t need grips. Four years later, his brown belt Eddie Bravo used that system to defeat Royler Gracie at ADCC 2003 in Sao Paulo.
From Rio to Los Angeles to Abu Dhabi, we trace how a congenital hand condition forced an innovation that rewrote no gi jiu jitsu and 66 bjj history . Featuring Rigan Machado vs Rickson Gracie, the Machado exodus, the founding of ADCC, Jean Jacques vs Ricardo Arona in the 2001 open-weight final, and Eddie Bravo vs Royler Gracie 2003.If Jean Jacques’s story stayed with you and you want to go deeper, here are the books that built this documentary.
