PRACTICAL MAGIC 2 is finally here, but what does a lifelong Alice Hoffman reader think of the adaptation?
Keiki is back on Smells Like Teen Angst to talk about PRACTICAL MAGIC 2 from the perspective of someone who has read the Alice Hoffman books, including THE BOOK OF MAGIC, which serves as the source material for the sequel.
Growing up, Practical Magic felt like one of those movies that was completely magical. The witches, the sisterhood, the romance, the Owens family lore… it was everything. But going into PRACTICAL MAGIC 2 as a book reader came with a very different set of expectations.
While Kiki found the movie nostalgic, funny, entertaining, and genuinely fun to watch, she couldn’t stop wondering how the film works as a book-to-screen adaptation.
In this video, Kiki breaks down some of the biggest changes between THE BOOK OF MAGIC and PRACTICAL MAGIC 2, including the Owens family lore, the missing Vincent Owens storyline, Tom Lockhart, Ian, the curse, the film’s approach to magic, and what happened to some of the deeper themes from the novel.
THE BOOK OF MAGIC is a story about family, identity, discovering yourself, motherhood, love, and understanding your own magic. So does PRACTICAL MAGIC 2 capture what made the book special?
Or did the adaptation get a little too focused on breaking the curse?
This is a SPOILER-FILLED discussion, so make sure you’ve seen PRACTICAL MAGIC 2 before watching. And if you’ve read THE BOOK OF MAGIC, we definitely want to hear from you!
Did you prefer the movie or the book? What changes stood out to you? What did you think the adaptation was missing?
