He’s back. The guy who said Democrats would govern by locking up priests now admits no priest has ever been jailed, and says I need to be “learned” about the wedding cake cases instead. Fine. Let’s talk about it.
His examples are the Colorado and Oregon bakers who refused to make custom wedding cakes for gay couples: Masterpiece Cakeshop in Colorado and Sweet Cakes by Melissa in Oregon, which was hit with about $135,000 in damages and closed. Both cases went to the Supreme Court, and he says that proves blue states punish people for their faith.
Here’s what he’s missing. Have you ever owned a business? When you form an LLC or an S corp, you legally separate yourself from the business. That’s the whole point. My trucking company ran that way; if a driver causes a wreck on I-55, the company can lose everything, but you don’t lose your house. The business entity doesn’t have a religion. You do. Those bakers wanted the full legal protection of that separation while still injecting their personal beliefs into who they serve. By that logic, a business owner with racist beliefs could refuse to serve Black customers. When you open your doors, you’re open to everybody. In my opinion, the Supreme Court got it wrong. And nobody’s ignoring you, buddy. You’re just not that special.
