You’re eating clean, working out and getting your steps in, and the scale still won’t budge. Before you blame your willpower, check the engine. Here are three hidden reasons a simple blood test can find: a slow thyroid, the hormones that change the rules after 40, and the nutrient gaps that leave your body running on worn-out spark plugs.

When you’re doing the work and the scale won’t move, it’s not always a willpower problem. Your thyroid works like the thermostat in your house, and when it slows down, your body just burns less fuel. After 40, your hormones work like a GPS that installs an update and starts routing fat straight to your belly. And if you’re low on the small stuff, like vitamin D, magnesium, iron and B12, it’s like filling the tank with premium gas while the spark plugs are worn out.

So here’s the one thing to do this week: call your doctor and book a full blood panel. Ask for four things: a full thyroid panel, your sex hormones, your fasting glucose and insulin, and your vitamins and minerals. I’m a nutrition consultant, not a medical doctor, so let your doctor read the results with you. One blood test, four things to ask for, and no more guessing.
