Why We Need Rites Of Passage For Black Boys

A Black British man shares how the Manhood Academy is creating rites of passage to rebuild respect and protection for young Black boys.

The guest discusses how Black British men are coming together to redefine masculinity through the Manhood Academy, focusing on protection, respect, and community. He explains that many young Black boys in the UK grow up without formal rites of passage, leaving them without clear guidance into manhood. This absence, he says, contributes to patterns of disrespect and disconnection that are often reinforced by mainstream culture.

Drawing from cultural examples in Ghana and Southern Africa, he highlights how other communities have long-standing traditions that emphasize respect for women and the earth. He calls attention to the need for similar frameworks in the UK, noting that men are stepping up to fill the gap. The work, he says, is not about blame but about building better relationships and stronger communities, starting at home.
