The Night Watch isn’t at night. And for 300 years, part of it was missing.
In 1715, Rembrandt’s masterpiece was trimmed on all four sides just to fit between two columns in Amsterdam’s Town Hall. Two figures were cut away and never found. Then, in 2021, artificial intelligence brought them back.
In this episode we look closely at Rembrandt’s most famous painting: the captain’s shadow, the musketeers in motion, the mysterious girl in the golden dress, the darkened varnish that gave it the wrong name, and the knife, acid and war it survived. And at the back of the crowd, a single eye that may belong to Rembrandt himself.
