Why Japan’s Bears Are More Dangerous Than America’s Grizzlies

Japan’s bears are smaller than America’s grizzlies. Yet in the year to March 2026, bears attacked 238 people in Japan and killed 13, a national record, while all of North America sees a handful of fatal attacks in a typical year. This is the story of how a small black bear with a white crescent on its chest walked out of the forest and into Japanese towns: the beech crop that failed, the villages that emptied, the hunters who grew old, and what America learned in Yellowstone decades ago.
