Remnant, an epic flintlock fantasy, is The Patriot meets Castlevania with a Firefly-inspired crew of misfits. Immortals losing their sanity rule the world until a family of smugglers gets in their way.
This is my debut novel, co-written with my mother, C R Jacobson, and began as doodles and character outlines in my 10th grade notebook, for which I received several detentions 😩
This chapter is narrated by the amazing Michael Kramer, who duel narrated the entire first book with his wife, Kate Reading. We are so grateful for their contribution to making this story come to life!
What began as maladaptive daydreaming in a high school classroom in 2001 became a journey that repaired a very tense mother-daughter relationship, fueled my self confidence through my early 20s, and carried me through severe postpartum depression with my first child.
After lots of querying, we had a pile of no replies, a smaller pile of form rejections, and a few shiny notes from agents and publishers who read the book and said, “This is a really good book but I can’t market it.”
So we decided to try marketing it ourselves. Turns out, they were onto something! Marketing a sweeping epic with a large cast and a story that doesn’t hold the readers hand is REALLY HARD in a time when marketers push bite sized, easily digestible and entertainment-centered stories. Nothing wrong with those books. But on a diet of ice cream, one might find a steak dinner a lot to chew on.
But we know our readers are out there. If that’s you, please help us spread the word. Like, subscribe, and all that. But more importantly, read the book, leave a review, and tell your fellow readers about us. Thank you for taking the time to give our story a chance!

About this book:
A dead immortal. A desperate manhunt. A family caught in the crossfire.
The shocking death of an immortal sends a master of shadows on a quest for the killer. Jon Therman and his family of sunrock smugglers stumble into this manhunt. A former slave, he only desires to live unnoticed and to avoid the corruption of the world. But when an immortal pursues his children, Jon retaliates.
His daughter, Ella, attempts to rescue her friend from a ritual sacrifice. To do so, she must defy the commands of her fellow smugglers. Jaded spy Shane zem’Arta searches for his missing commander. His orders complicate Ella’s effort to save her friend and Jon’s mission to protect his family, leading these old friends on a perilous adventure.
Smugglers, rogues, and lords clamber to stand against a powerful cult of immortals. Can these fragile factions set aside their mistrust to survive a burgeoning war, or will they fall divided?
WHEN AN IMMORTAL DIES, NO ONE MOURNS BUT PEOPLE NOTICE
Remnant, the first installment of the epic flintlock fantasy series, The Palimar Saga, introduces a world of magic, trolls, shapeshifters, and guns. Embark on this gripping gaslamp adventure filled with magic, intrigue, and battle. With a richly detailed world reminiscent of works like The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss and The Powder Mage Trilogy by Brian McClellan, Remnant presents a realm where immortals walk among us, and every action carries weighty consequences.
