D.B. Cooper: The Money on the Riverbank (Part 3)

On Sunday, February 10th, 1980, an eight-year-old boy raked the sand at Tena Bar to build a campfire — and found three packets of rotting twenty-dollar bills. Every serial number matched the FBI’s list. It is still the only physical evidence from the Cooper hijacking ever found outside the aeroplane.

The final part of The Vanishing Case of Dan Cooper lets the evidence talk: the $5,800 and what the river did to it, the black clip-on tie and the exotic particles trapped in its fibres, the DNA profile that cannot speak, and the parade of more than a thousand suspects — the copycat, the airline man, the man who faked his death, the deathbed confession — every one investigated, not one ever charged. And at the end, the name itself: he never called himself D.B. Cooper at all.

The file closes stamped what it remains today: UNRESOLVED.

A note on method: every factual claim in this episode is drawn from the sources below and logged in the episode’s fact ledger (87 claims, 11 sources, shared across the three parts). Every suspect named is presented exactly as the record presents them — investigated or alleged, never stated to be guilty. Particle and DNA findings are reported as the researchers’ inferences, with their limits stated in the narration.
